Study Abroad
Software Engineering in Vienna, Austria
Summers - Even Years
In Summer 2024, I lead a study abroad program to Vienna, Austria. This experience was designed specifically for Computer Science undergraduate students (BS CS, BS ACS, and CS minors) and was one of the first faculty-led CS-specific study abroad opportunities in the country. This program will repeat on even years.
Students completing this program received 6 credits that directly applied to their BS CS or BS ACS degree. CS minors were also able make use of these credits. Specifically, students received credit for CS 321 (Software Engineering) and CS 399 (Global Software Engineering). These courses were designed to provide students with practical experience in software engineering within an international context.
Through hands-on projects and real-world scenarios, students gained a comprehensive understanding of the software development life cycle (SDLC) and developed necessary skills to work effectively in distributed team environments. Students also had the opportunity to appreciate the rich history of technology and manufacturing in Austria, particularly as it relates to software engineering. The term project for this course resulted in the development of a software application incorporating the study abroad experience.
